MONEY STUFF & BUDGETING FOR YOUR TOUR

Although Kenya is renowned for its luxury safari lodges and high-end tourist experiences, our tours are designed to make the beauty of Kenya accessible to the everyday traveler. By combining visits to both well-known and off-the-beaten-path destinations, we offer a more affordable way to experience this magnificent country.

Throughout the week, many aspects of your trip are included, helping to minimize your expenses. However, as a guideline, most travellers find it comfortable to bring approximately $500 - $1,000 USD per person in spending money for the week, depending on the activities that you opt in and out of.

This budget will cover any additional excursions you choose to participate in, meals and drinks not included in the tour package, alcohol, and tips for local staff. With careful planning, this amount should allow you to enjoy the diverse experiences Kenya has to offer without concern over finances.
IMPORTANT: Please note that excursions are required to be paid for in cash in USD. There are ATMs throughout Nairobi & Kenya, that distribute local currency, but this may be accept by suppliers at a higher exchange rate.

Although Cash is King here in Kenya, there are some places that willingly accept card. If possible, download your digital card to your phone wallet as most banks will charge less fees when paying this way rather than using your physical card.

Tipping: Tipping is not compulsory and it’s entirely up to you if you decide to. The tour guides and locals we work with in Kenya do an amazing job and you will see them always take incredible footage for everyone, go above and beyond to ensure you have the best week of your life on our tours. You will have the opportunity to show your gratitude to them at the end of the tour.

The amount you tip is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline we suggest is USD$10 USD per day per person for the guides, and tour representatives. It’s definitely not expected but is very much appreciated.

CURRENCY

The Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the local currency, but US Dollars are also widely accepted, particularly in tourist areas and for major expenses like hotel stays and safari tours. It’s convenient to have a mix of both currencies. You can exchange money at the airport upon arrival, where currency exchange booths offer competitive rates. However, it’s wise to exchange some money into Kenyan Shillings before your trip if possible, to use for smaller purchases and in places that might not accept USD.
NOTE: Be sure that any USD notes you bring are in good condition without any tears or significant wear, as damaged notes may not be accepted.

Keep your currency exchange receipts, as you will need them if you wish to re-exchange Kenyan Shillings back to your home currency at the end of your stay. Remember, it’s easier to change USD back than KES outside of Kenya.

For the most accurate and up-to-date exchange rates, check XE.com or download their app to your mobile for quick access while you’re travelling.

PHONE

We understand the importance of staying connected while you’re away from home. Before departing, make sure your phone is unlocked to enable you to purchase a local SIM card upon arrival in Kenya. At Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’ll find several booths for local telecom companies like Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom Kenya. These providers offer a range of options depending on your data needs in urban areas.

For those who prefer a seamless setup without the need to swap physical SIM cards, eSIMs are a great alternative. They allow you to pre-purchase data plans before you arrive in Kenya, enabling immediate connectivity upon landing. Here are some popular eSIM providers that offer data plans for travelers to Kenya:

-
Airalo
Airalo offers a variety of eSIM plans tailored to short-term travelers in Kenya. You can choose from several options depending on your length of stay and data needs. For instance, their "Savannah" plan might offer 1GB of data for 7 days or 3GB for 30 days, all activated instantly upon your arrival without the need for a physical SIM card.

-
HolaFly
HolaFly specializes in eSIMs for travelers and provides coverage in Kenya with unlimited data plans. These plans are easy to purchase and activate online, and you can select the duration that best fits your travel schedule, such as 5, 10, 15, or 30 days.

-
iRoamly
iRoamly offers competitive rates for eSIM data plans in Kenya, with options suitable for both short visits and extended stays. You can customize your plan based on your data usage, and like other eSIM services, set everything up before you depart.

Advantages of Using eSIMs:
-
Convenience: Activate your eSIM before you travel, and connect as soon as you land.
-
Flexibility: Choose a data plan that suits your duration of stay and data needs.
-
No Physical SIM: Avoid the hassle of changing your SIM card and keep your primary number active.

How to Use an eSIM:
-
Check Compatibility: Ensure your smartphone supports eSIM technology.
-
Purchase the Plan: Select and pay for your eSIM plan through the provider's website or app.
-
Installation: Follow the provider’s instructions to install the eSIM on your device.
-
Activation: Activate the eSIM plan to start using data in Kenya.
Using an eSIM like Airalo, HolaFly, or iRoamly can greatly simplify staying connected while traveling abroad, offering a mix of convenience, cost-efficiency, and ample data to meet most travel needs.

If you don’t require constant internet access, most hotels and lodges throughout Kenya offer free WiFi, though the connection might be slower and less reliable than you’re used to. This can suffice for occasional check-ins or social media updates.

Remember to check with your home carrier about international roaming options as well, which can be a convenient albeit sometimes more expensive alternative to using a local SIM.

ALCOHOL

Kenya is more liberal in terms of alcohol consumption compared to some other countries. Alcohol is widely available and legally consumed in licensed premises such as hotels, restaurants, and bars across the country, including both urban and rural areas. This openness applies equally to tourists and residents.

However, it’s important to consume alcohol responsibly and be aware of your surroundings, especially in rural or predominantly Muslim areas where local customs may encourage more conservative behaviour. Your Indy Escapes representative will provide guidance on appropriate conduct during your stay.

ELECTRICITY

In Kenya, the electricity supply is 220V to 240V, 50Hz AC. The standard socket is the UK-style three-pin plug. While some accommodations may accommodate other plug types, it is advisable to bring a universal travel adaptor to ensure compatibility, especially if you're travelling with devices that use European, US, or Australian plugs.

Helpful Tip: While many hotels and lodges in Kenya offer adaptors for guest use, their availability can be limited. Carrying your own adaptor ensures you can charge your devices without any hassle. It’s also a good idea to bring a power strip if you have multiple devices to charge.

INSURANCE

When traveling to Kenya with Indy Escapes, it's compulsory to have your own personal travel insurance.

Why Compulsory Insurance is Important for Travel to Kenya:

-
Medical Coverage: Access to quality medical care in Kenya can be costly, especially in the event of an emergency or the need for medical evacuation, which can be prohibitively expensive without insurance.
-
Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Travel plans can change unexpectedly due to illness, emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances. Insurance can help recover costs associated with these changes.
-
Personal Liability: In case of damages or injuries caused to others, some insurance policies offer personal liability coverage which can be crucial.
-
Adventure Activities: Kenya offers numerous adventurous activities like safari tours, hot air ballooning, and mountain climbing. Many of these require specific coverage due to their inherent risks.
-
Loss or Theft of Belongings: With the potential risk of loss or theft of luggage and personal effects, having insurance coverage can provide peace of mind and financial assistance.

What to Look for in a Travel Insurance Policy:

-
Comprehensive Medical Cover: Ensure it includes hospitalisation, emergency treatment, and medical evacuation.
-
Coverage for Pre-existing Conditions: If applicable, make sure your pre-existing conditions are covered.
-
Activities Included: Check that your policy covers specific activities planned on your trip.
-
24/7 Emergency Assistance: Access to a 24-hour assistance line can be invaluable when you're in a different time zone.
-
Repatriation: In case of serious illness or injury, coverage for repatriation back to your home country is crucial.

Before purchasing a policy, read the fine print to ensure it meets all your needs while abroad, and verify that the insurance provider is reputable and responsive to claims and inquiries. Always carry a copy of your insurance policy and contact numbers for your insurance provider when traveling.
