ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival Day
Tokyo arrival
-
Touch down in Tokyo and feel the buzz of the world’s biggest metropolis greeting you the moment you step off the plane. Your Indy Escapes crew will be waiting in the lobby for a warm welcome and quick check-in. Take a little time to freshen up, then re-group as the late-afternoon neon flickers to life outside. We’ll stroll together through Shinjuku’s tangle of alleyways, grab a celebratory first group dinner and raise a toast to the adventures ahead. Tonight is all about settling in, meeting your travel companions, and soaking up your first taste of Japan’s electric capital.

Day 2: Tokyo
City Tour, E-Bikes & Optional Sumo
Start with a hearty hotel breakfast, then dive into a guided coach tour that threads Tokyo’s headline sights, from serene shrine gardens to futuristic skyscrapers. Mid-day we’ll park the bus for something uniquely local: lunch at DAWN - Avatar Robot Cafe, where meals are delivered by remotely operated robot “waiters” staffed by people with disabilities; a feel-good tech twist on Tokyo’s dining scene. Recharged, we’ll swap four wheels for two and glide back toward Shinjuku on an e-bike ride through leafy backstreets and riverside paths. Late afternoon you can either keep exploring solo or grab a seat at an optional up-close sumo exhibition before regrouping for dinner in neon-lit Shinjuku.
Day 3: Tokyo
Shibuya, Harajuku & Meiji Jingu
After breakfast we’ll ride the train to the famous Shibuya Scramble, absorbing the organised chaos before slipping into side-streets for local photo spots and cafes. A quick hop takes us to Harajuku, where you can tuck into a playful themed lunch (think rainbow crepes or character lattes) and browse the fashion-hub boutiques. From there we’ll stroll under towering cedars into Meiji Jingu, trading neon for the tranquillity of Tokyo’s most beloved shrine and its surrounding forest paths. The rest of the afternoon is yours—shop, museum-hop, or chill at a rooftop bar—before regrouping in Shinjuku for dinner and stories from the day.

Day 4: Takayama
Journey into the Japanese Alps
After one last Tokyo breakfast we’ll check out, load the bags, and roll north-west by private coach toward the Japanese Alps. Mid-journey we’ll break in castle-town Matsumoto for a tasty local lunch, think soba noodles or wasabi-flavoured treats and grab a quick photo of Matsumoto-jō’s black-lacquered keep. By mid-afternoon the mountains close in and we arrive in charming Takayama. You’ll have time to wander the Edo-era streets, pop into sake breweries, or browse craft shops before regrouping for a relaxed group dinner featuring Hida beef and other alpine flavours. A slower pace, fresh mountain air, and a whole new side of Japan.
Day 5: Takayama
Kamikochi Hiking & Onsen
Enjoy breakfast at our hotel, then we set off into the Japanese Alps for a full-day escape in Kamikochi. A gentle riverside trail guides us beneath towering peaks and over crystal-clear streams, with plenty of stops for photos and fresh mountain air. In the afternoon we soak weary legs at Okuhida Hot Spring Village, easing into steamy outdoor baths while snow-capped ridges fill the horizon. Relaxed and refreshed, we head back to Takayama for a cosy dinner at the hotel and stories from the trail.

Day 6: Kyoto
Shirakawa, Fushimi Inari & Kiyomizu-dera
After breakfast we load the coach and leave Takayama, winding through cedar-lined valleys to the fairytale village of Shirakawa-go. You’ll have time to wander the thatched-roof gassho houses, sample fresh gohei-mochi on the street and snap postcard shots from the lookout. By early afternoon we continue south, watching rice paddies and tea fields slide past before rolling into Kyoto. We toast our arrival with a sizzling okonomiyaki lunch, then head out to walk the endless red torii of Fushimi Inari and take in sunset views from Kiyomizu-dera. The evening is free to explore Kyoto’s lantern-lit lanes and find dinner that suits your mood.
Day 7: Kyoto
Bamboo Forest, Scenic Hike & Ninja Class
Kyoto is one of the most icon cities in Japan so, we’ll head out early to stroll the whisper-quiet paths of Arashiyama’s bamboo grove, watching sunlight slice through the green stalks overhead. From there a gentle riverside walk leads us past little temples and into the foothills, offering postcard views back across the valley. We break for lunch in a local eatery, perfect fuel before stepping into a optional one-hour ninja class where you’ll learn basic stealth moves and try your hand at a blow-dart or throwing star. The rest of the evening is yours: wander Gion’s lantern-lit lanes, shop for matcha treats, or settle into a cosy izakaya and let Kyoto work its magic, the meet back for a family dinner later in the evening.

Day 8: Osaka
Walking Tour, River Cruise & Cooking Class
After breakfast we head into vibrant Osaka for a relaxed walking tour that threads the retro arcades, hidden alley shrines and buzzing food markets around Namba. We then swap pavement for water, gliding along the Dotonbori canal on a short river cruise that shows off the neon signs from a new angle. Lunch turns hands-on as a local chef teaches us to whip up smoky ramen and golden-crisp gyoza skills you can brag about back home. Your final evening is free to savour Osaka’s street-food scene, hunt down that last souvenir or simply share a kanpai with your Indy family before tomorrow’s goodbyes.
Day 9: Departure Day
Osaka departure
Share a final breakfast, check out, and bid farewell to your new Indy friends. When you’re ready, make your own way to the airport for your flight home or onward adventure. Safe travels and see you on the next escape.

Japan Travel FAQs
Who is this Japan group tour for?
Our Japan group tour is designed for travellers in their 20s and 30s who want a fun, social and adventure-focused way to experience Japan. It’s ideal for solo travellers, couples and small groups of friends who want to explore modern cities, traditional neighbourhoods, mountain scenery, temples, local food and Japanese culture as part of an organised group.
Is this Japan trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo travellers make up a large part of the Indy Escapes community. The tour is designed to be social from the beginning, with shared activities, group meals and plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded travellers. You can join alone without having to organise the route, transport or activities by yourself.
What age group joins this trip?
This Japan group tour is aimed at travellers in their 20s and 30s. The atmosphere is social, relaxed and adventurous. It’s designed for people who want to experience Japan with a group rather than joining a traditional coach tour or travelling completely alone.
What makes this different from a normal Japan holiday?
This is more than a city break in Tokyo and Kyoto. The tour combines futuristic cities, traditional neighbourhoods, mountain towns, scenic hiking, Japanese food, cultural experiences and nightlife. You’ll travel from Tokyo to Takayama, explore the Japanese Alps around Kamikochi, visit Kyoto and finish in Osaka. It’s Japan with more variety, more social connection and less time spent organising everything yourself.
Where does the tour start and finish?
The tour starts in Tokyo and finishes in Osaka. You should arrange your arrival flight into Tokyo and your departure flight from Osaka, or take to "Bullet Train" back to Tokyo after the tour. The exact joining hotel, meeting point and start time will be confirmed in your pre-departure information.
Which airports should I use?
For arrival, you can fly into either Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport in Tokyo. For departure, Kansai International Airport is the main international airport serving Osaka. Always check the tour dates and meeting time before booking your flights. We recommend arriving no later than the first day of the tour, although arriving one day early can make the start of your trip more relaxed.
Are airport transfers included?
Airport transfers are not included. As everyone will be flying into Japan at different times, and from different destinations, you will make your own way from the airport to the joining hotel in Tokyo and from the final hotel in Osaka to the airport. These days, it is extremely easy and safe to organise an Uber from door to door. Japan also has reliable trains, airport buses and taxis, and full arrival instructions will be provided before travel.
Do I need a visa for Japan?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality, passport and length of stay. Many travellers can visit Japan for a short holiday without arranging a visa in advance, but you must check the official entry requirements for your passport before booking. Make sure your passport is valid, you have proof of onward travel and you meet any entry requirements in place at the time of departure.
Is Japan safe?
Japan is widely known as a traveller-friendly destination, but you should still take normal precautions.
Look after your belongings, follow local laws, stay aware when using public transport and listen to your Indy Escapes guide during activities and travel days. We also recommend checking current government travel advice before departure and purchasing comprehensive travel insurance.
How physically demanding is the trip?
You’ll find a few active days. Think city strolls, temple steps, an e-bike spin and a scenic Kamikōchi walk, so you can experience Japan in a more hands-on, memorable way. Every activity is planned to be inclusive and pace-friendly, and you’re always free to opt in or out depending on how you feel. Comfortable shoes and a basic level of mobility are all you need.
Do I need cycling experience for the E-Bike tour?
You should be able to ride a bicycle confidently and safely. The electric assistance makes cycling easier, but the tour may still involve roads, junctions and busy areas of Tokyo. Guides and safety instructions and equipment will be provided before the activity. Guests who are not comfortable cycling should speak to the Indy Escapes team before departure.
What is included in the Japan tour?
Your Japan trip includes hotel accommodation, transport between the main destinations, daily breakfasts and a selection of guided tours, cultural experiences and group activities. The proposed itinerary includes experiences across Tokyo, Takayama, Kamikochi, Kyoto and Osaka. Exact inclusions may vary slightly by departure, so please check the live itinerary and your travel voucher for the final details.
What additional costs should I expect?
Flights, travel insurance, most lunches and dinners, drinks, tips, personal expenses and some optional activities are not included unless stated otherwise. You should also budget for local transport during free time, snacks, shopping and any extra attractions you choose to visit. Optional activities and prices will be confirmed before or during the tour.
How much spending money should I bring?
This depends on your spending style, eating preferences and how many optional activities you choose.
Japan can suit different budgets. You can eat affordably at convenience stores, noodle restaurants and casual local restaurants, while themed restaurants, nightlife, shopping and premium dining will cost more. Bring enough for meals not included, drinks, optional activities, local transport during free time, souvenirs and personal expenses. Cards are widely accepted, but carrying some Japanese yen is recommended.
How much does food cost in Japan?
Affordable meals such as ramen, curry, rice bowls and convenience-store food can often be found at reasonable prices. Casual restaurant meals usually cost more, while sushi experiences, themed restaurants and premium dining can be significantly higher. Japan has options for most budgets, and your tour guide can recommend places to eat in each destination.
What if I have dietary requirements?
Please tell us about any dietary requirements or allergies before travelling. Vegetarian and allergy-friendly options are available in Japan, but some requirements can be more difficult to accommodate than in the UK or Europe. Fish stock, soy, gluten and other ingredients may appear in dishes even when they are not obvious. We will do our best to help, but guests with serious allergies should carry translated allergy information and any necessary medication.
What should I pack for Japan?
Pack comfortable clothing suitable for city sightseeing, cultural sites and outdoor activities. Useful items include supportive walking shoes, a lightweight rain jacket, comfortable layers, a small day bag, reusable water bottle, portable charger, travel adaptor and any personal medication. Weather can vary between Tokyo, the Japanese Alps, Kyoto and Osaka, so check the seasonal forecast before departure.
Can I use an onsen if I have tattoos?
Some traditional onsens refuse visible tattoos, while others simply ask that ink be fully covered or that guests book a private bath. Because each property sets its own policy, Indy Escapes chooses an onsen that does welcome tattooed visitors, provided the artwork is completely covered with a sticker or similar patch.
How much luggage should I bring?
We recommend travelling with one manageable suitcase or backpack and a small day bag. The tour involves moving between several cities and using trains or other shared transport, so large or heavy luggage can make travel days difficult. Pack light enough that you can comfortably move your own luggage through stations, hotels and busy streets.
Will I have free time?
Yes. The itinerary includes organised activities alongside time to explore independently, shop, visit cafés, try local food or join optional experiences. Your guide will provide recommendations and help you make the most of your free time in each destination.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential. Your policy should cover medical treatment, cancellation, lost belongings and the activities included in the itinerary. Make sure your policy covers Japan for the full duration of your trip and declare any existing medical conditions.
How do I book the Japan tour?
Booking is simple. Click "BOOK NOW" and secure your spot with a $300 USD deposit. Alternatively, send us a booking enquiry, choose your preferred departure date, pay your deposit and receive your confirmation. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive your travel voucher and pre-departure information to help you prepare for your Japan adventure with Indy Escapes.
