Enjoy your final moments in this vibrant city before your onward journey!

6). Visa Requirements

Because your trip includes visiting both Rwanda and Uganda, you have a few options for visas:

East Africa Tourist Visa

The East Africa Tourist Visa allows multiple entries between Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya for 90 days. It’s the best option for travellers planning to explore more of East Africa. The cost is $100 USD and you can apply for the visa online or upon arrival at Kigali International Airport.

Rwanda Single-Entry Visa

If you’re only staying in Rwanda and already have a visa for Uganda, you can opt for a single-entry Rwandan visa upon arrival at Kigali International Airport.

Uganda Single-Entry Visa

A single-entry visa is required for entry into Uganda. This can be obtained online through the Uganda Electronic Visa Application System. When completing the Electronic Visa Application you will be prompted with the question; Point of entry or where you want to have your visa personalised, please select: Katuna. This will be our point of entry when crossing from Rwanda to Uganda, and where you will have your fingerprints taken.

Important Note: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry and that you have two blank pages available for stamps.

7. Currency and Payment Options

Rwandan Francs (RWF) and Ugandan Shillings (UGX) are the local currencies, but US Dollars are widely accepted in hotels, lodges, and for major expenses. Make sure any USD bills you bring are in good condition, as torn or worn notes may not be accepted. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants in Kigali, but it’s best to have cash on hand for smaller establishments, rural areas and when gorilla trekking - even at our lodge.

Important Tips

- Carry Small Denominations: Having $1, $5, and $10 USD bills will be useful for tipping and small purchases.
- ATMs and Banks: Available in Kigali and larger towns, but may not be accessible in Bwindi or remote areas. Withdraw cash in advance if needed.
- Currency Exchange: You can exchange currency at the airport or major banks in Kigali. Keep exchange receipts if you wish to re-convert currency before departing.
- Carry Both Local Currency and USD: Some vendors prefer local currency, while others accept USD. Having both on hand provides flexibility.

By planning and budgeting accordingly, you’ll be able to enjoy your trip without worrying about unexpected expenses. Safe travels, and we look forward to sharing this incredible experience with you!

8. Budgeting for Your Trip

While many aspects of your gorilla trekking tour are included, it’s a good idea to budget for additional expenses to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here’s a breakdown of typical costs you might incur during your trip:

Suggested Budget

We recommend bringing approximately $300 - $500 USD in cash for optional activities, meals, tips, and other expenses not included in your package. ATMs are available in Kigali and major towns, but access can be limited in remote areas like Bwindi. Carrying a mix of smaller denominations will be useful for tipping and smaller purchases.

What to Budget For

- Meals and Drinks Not Included in the Tour

While most meals are included in your itinerary, you might want to budget for a few additional meals or drinks during free time. Meals in local restaurants typically range from $10 - $20 USD, while drinks, such as soft drinks or beers, cost around $2 - $5 USD.

- Optional Activities and Excursions

There are several optional activities that you may want to participate in, such as cultural visits, community tours, or additional wildlife excursions. These activities usually range from $10 to $30 USD depending on the experience.

- Pigmy Village Tour

- Ten Pin Bowling Bowling

- Final Dinner

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. As a guideline, we suggest $10 USD per day for tour representatives and local guides, $5 USD for porters during the trek, and $2 - $5 USD for hotel staff and drivers. Carrying small bills will make tipping easier.

Souvenirs and Local Purchases

You may want to purchase handmade crafts, artwork, or other souvenirs to support the local communities. Budget around $50 - $100 USD if you plan on shopping for gifts or mementoes.

Additional Snacks and Beverages

Consider budgeting for extra snacks or drinks, especially for long travel days or during the trek. Local snacks can be found at grocery stores or roadside stands for a few dollars.

9). Preparing for the Gorilla Trek

The main highlight of your trip is the gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This adventure can be physically demanding but incredibly rewarding. To make the most of your trek, here are a few tips:

Physical Preparation

The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. You’ll be traversing steep, muddy terrain, so it’s essential to be in good physical shape. Practice hiking or walking on uneven ground to build stamina and improve balance before the trip.

What to Wear

- Hiking Boots: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are a must.
- Long-Sleeved Shirt and Trousers: These will protect you from insect bites and thorny vegetation.
- Rain Jacket and Waterproof Gear: The weather in Bwindi can be unpredictable, even in the dry season, so pack a lightweight, breathable rain jacket.
- Garden Gloves: Handy for protecting your hands while navigating through the thick forest.

Essential Gear
- Walking Stick: Provided by the park, a walking stick can help you maintain balance on slippery paths.
- Gaiters: Protect your legs and boots from mud and insects.
- Snacks and Water: Carry high-energy snacks and at least 2 litres of water for the trek.

Hiring a Porter

Hiring a porter to assist with carrying your daypack and offering support along the trek is highly recommended. This not only provides employment for locals but also ensures that you have the energy and focus to enjoy the trek.

10). The Gorilla Trekking Experience

The day begins early with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn about the do's and dont's of gorilla trekking. After being divided into groups based on fitness levels and preferences, you’ll set off into the forest accompanied by experienced guides and trackers.

During the Trek:

- Stay close to your guide and follow instructions at all times.
- Maintain a respectful distance of at least 7 metres from the gorillas.
- Avoid sudden movements and loud noises.
- Do not use flash photography.

- Wear a mask to prevent spread of disease.

Time with the Gorillas:

Once you locate a gorilla family, you’ll have one hour to observe and photograph these majestic creatures. Watch as they go about their day, from playful interactions to feeding and grooming. This is a rare opportunity to witness these endangered primates in their natural habitat.

What to Expect After the Trek

After your time with the gorillas, you’ll trek back to the park headquarters for a debrief and to receive your certificate of participation. You’ll then return to your lodge, where you can relax and share your experiences with fellow travellers over dinner.

11). Additional Activities in Rwanda and Uganda

If you have additional time before or after your gorilla trek, consider the following activities:

- Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
- Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rwanda
- Safari Game Drive in Akagera National Park, Rwanda

These activities offer further insights into the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

12). Food in Rwanda & Uganda

The cuisine in Rwanda and Uganda is a vibrant mix of fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional recipes that reflect the diverse cultures of both countries. In Rwanda, popular dishes include ugali (a maize or cassava flour dough), isombe (cassava leaves cooked with groundnuts), and brochettes (grilled meat skewers), often accompanied by Rwandan tea or coffee. Uganda’s cuisine features staples like matoke (steamed green bananas), luwombo (meat or fish steamed in banana leaves), and the ever-popular rolex (an omelette rolled in a chapati). Both countries offer delicious groundnut (peanut) sauces served over starchy bases like sweet potatoes, cassava, or rice. While dining, try local beers like Rwanda’s Primus or Uganda’s Nile Special, and be sure to sample fresh fruit juices made from mango, pineapple, or passion fruit. For a unique taste, Uganda’s Waragi, a locally distilled gin, is also worth experiencing. Visitors can enjoy these dishes at local eateries called "bufundas," buffet-style restaurants, or international establishments in major cities like Kigali and Kampala, ensuring a diverse and satisfying culinary adventure.

Check out our travel guide for more information on food in Rwanda and Uganda.

13). Alcohol

Alcohol is widely available and legally consumed in both Rwanda and Uganda. You’ll find a variety of beers, wines, and spirits at restaurants, bars, and hotels throughout your journey. Rwanda is known for its locally brewed beer, Primus, and Uganda offers Nile Special, another popular choice.

In Uganda, be mindful that alcohol consumption is generally not frowned upon, but it’s respectful to be discreet in rural or predominantly Muslim areas. When in doubt, ask your guide or host about local customs related to drinking. Many hotels and lodges have well-stocked bars, so you’ll be able to enjoy a sundowner or celebratory drink after your trekking adventure.

14). Phone

Staying connected during your trip is easy with a local SIM card. We recommend purchasing a Rwandan or Ugandan SIM card upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or at a telecom store. Popular providers include MTN and Airtel, offering various data packages depending on your needs. To purchase a SIM card, you’ll need to show your passport and register your details with the provider.

If you prefer not to change your SIM card, eSIMs are a convenient alternative, allowing you to purchase and activate a local data plan before arriving in Rwanda. Providers like Airalo and Holafly offer eSIMs with competitive rates, giving you instant connectivity as soon as you land.

Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, including the Lemigo Hotel, as well as in many cafes and public areas, though the connection speed may vary in more remote areas like Bwindi. For the best experience, having a local SIM or eSIM is recommended when exploring beyond major towns and cities.

15). Electricity

In Rwanda and Uganda, the power supply is 220-240V, with the standard plug type being the British-style three-pin (Type G). It’s advisable to bring a universal travel adapter to ensure compatibility with your devices. Power outages can occasionally occur in more remote areas, so consider carrying a power bank to keep your devices charged, especially for your camera and phone during the gorilla trek.

If you have multiple devices, bringing a power strip or multi-USB charger can be useful, as some accommodations may have limited plug points.

16). Insurance

Travel insurance is essential for your gorilla trekking trip. It should cover emergency medical treatment, evacuation, and trip cancellations, especially as trekking in Bwindi can involve steep and challenging terrain. Make sure your policy includes coverage for high-risk activities like gorilla trekking and hiking.

Check that your insurance also covers personal belongings and liability. If you’re planning any additional excursions, such as safaris or boat trips, verify that these activities are included in your policy. Always carry a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact details with you, and leave a copy with a family member or friend at home.

17). Final Checklist

- Confirm your visas and border entry requirements.
- Carry your yellow fever vaccination certificate and any other recommended health documents.
- Ensure you have all the necessary gear for trekking.

- Obtain fully comprehensive travel insurance.
- Bring a small amount of cash in both USD and local currency for any additional expenses, tips, or purchases.

With all your preparations in place, you’re set for a once-in-a-lifetime experience exploring the incredible mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Enjoy the trek and make the most of every moment in this beautiful part of the world!
