I was lucky enough to join Bea on the Sierra Leone Cultural Immersion tour and it was fantastic. It was the perfect introduction to this amazing country. Bea perfectly balanced all the elements of relaxing and learning so we had time to process what we heard and saw. At all times I felt safe and completely trusted Bea's judgement.

ITINERARY

Day 1: ARRIVAL DAY

Your adventure kicks off as soon as you arrive at Lungi Airport, where I'll be there to greet you and extend a warm welcome to Salone. After getting you equipped with a local SIM card and currency, we'll head to Freetown by boat. While we wait we will brief you on what to expect over the coming days. Get ready for an authentic travel experience like no other!

On our drive to the dock, you'll catch your first glimpse of life in Sierra Leone, which one former guest described as "happy chaos." Once we arrive at the port, we'll hop on a small boat for a 45-minute ride across the water to Aberdeen. There, our Stafford Lodge hosts will be eagerly waiting to escort us to our home for the next few days.

Day 2: TACUGAMA CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY

On the 27th of April, Sierra Leone celebrates its Independence Day, promising a lively party atmosphere that evening! However, we’ll begin our day with a tranquil activity by visiting Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This visit will offer insights into the vital conservation work being undertaken to educate people and protect these remarkable primates. If you're not afraid of heights, you can end your visit with a view from the canopy.

For lunch, we will make our way to River No 2 beach, where you'll have an afternoon of relaxation at one of Sierra Leone’s most breathtaking beaches. Its shallow, turquoise waters and estuary-formed sandbanks are a feast for the eyes and a haven for swimmers. The gentle waves and rock free coastline provide an ideal spot for splashing around and enjoying the sunshine.

For those wanting to experience the local nightlife, there's an optional dinner at Jess Ka Mac on Lumley Beach, offering a lively atmosphere and the chance to create unforgettable memories.

Day 3: KEH-KEH TOUR OF FREETOWN AND COOKING CLASS

Experience the city's dynamic atmosphere as you travel through its lively streets in a Keh-keh, also known as a tuk-tuk, Sierra Leone's favourite vehicle for getting around. Where are we heading? A comprehensive city tour awaits!

Our city tour offers more than just a visual spectacle; it's crafted for those eager to explore the nation's colonial heritage, unravel the grim narratives of the slave trade, and understand the Civil War's impact on present day Sierra Leone.

Following a short break for lunch, we'll head towards a bustling local market to pick up fresh ingredients for the afternoon's highlight—a cooking class! But there's no need to hurry; the market's vibrant sights, aromatic smells, and lively sounds offer an adventure of their own!

The day will conclude with an interactive culinary session, where you'll learn to make traditional Sierra Leonean dishes. Local chefs will guide you in discovering the secrets of the rich flavours and age-old cooking methods handed down over the years.

Weather permitting, we’ll also undertake a hike to Leicester Peak, hoping to catch a spectacular view of the sunset over Freetown's bay—a perfect finale to a day filled with history, culture and excitement.

Day 4: BUNCE ISLAND & GOURMET MEALS

Our day begins with a poignant visit to Bunce Island, a historic fortification from which 30,000 Sierra Leonean slaves were transported to American plantations. We'll devote the morning to understanding this sorrowful part of history and its continuing influence on today's society.

After this reflective experience, we'll travel to Tasso Island to have lunch and enjoy a swim in the sea before returning to Freetown in a traditional wooden speed boat.

In the evening, there's an exceptional dinner arranged for those who wish to partake. We'll dine at Cole Street, Sierra Leone’s sole gourmet restaurant. Owned by a female lawyer, it supports single mothers by providing employment. Here, we'll savour a delicious meal while contributing to the local economy—a delightful experience indeed!

Day 5: FAREWELLS

Start your day early with a birdwatching session from the comfort of our accommodation's veranda, and don't forget your binoculars!

After breakfast, our Sierra Leone tour comes to an end and we begin the next phase of our adventure. If you're travelling on with Street Child, we'll transfer you to Makeni. This three-hour drive takes you through vibrant market towns, ensuring there's plenty to keep you entertained. For those heading home, we'll organise your transfer back to the airport.

Where can I find out more information about the Sierra Leone Marathon?

The Sierra Leone Marathon, organised by the charity Street Child, offers a unique opportunity to run for a cause while exploring Sierra Leone. This marathon takes place in Makeni, the country's third-largest city, and includes various race options: a full marathon (42.2 km), a half marathon (21.1 km), as well as 10 km and 5 km distances. Participants can run through urban and rural roads, including scenic villages and forests, making it both a physical and cultural adventure.

The event spans several days, allowing participants to visit Street Child’s educational projects, which are supported by the marathon's fundraising efforts. This experience not only highlights the impact of the charity’s work but also fosters deeper connections with the local community.

In 2024, the marathon will take place from 1st to 6th May. Participants can choose from several accommodation packages, ranging from basic to premium, with options for both three- and five-night stays. All packages include meals, transport, and access to Street Child’s projects, with longer stays offering more time to explore the country and interact with locals.

For further information or to register, you can visit the official Sierra Leone Marathon website or the Street Child Marathon page.
