Everything you need to know before travelling Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka packs a ridiculous amount into a relatively small island. Beaches, surf, wildlife, mountains, temples, tea country, great food and one of the most famous train journeys in Asia.
It is also a brilliant country for solo travellers. You can spend the morning hiking through the hills around Ella, go looking for elephants on safari the next day, then finish the week surfing and drinking coconuts on the south coast.
This Sri Lanka travel guide covers the important stuff: when to visit, where to go, what to do, what to eat and what to know before you arrive.
Why visit Sri Lanka?
For us, Sri Lanka is one of those destinations that has a bit of everything.
You have the cooler mountains around Kandy and Ella, wildlife safaris in Udawalawe National Park, surf towns like Weligama, beaches around Mirissa, plus temples, tea plantations and some seriously good food.
It works especially well as a group trip because every few days feels completely different.
Best time to visit Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka can be travelled throughout the year because different parts of the island experience different weather patterns.
For Kandy, Ella and the south coast, December to April generally brings some of the best conditions. November can still be warm and tropical, although showers are more common as the country moves out of its wetter period.
Sri Lanka averages warm tropical temperatures, while the hill country around Ella and Kandy can feel noticeably cooler.

The Kandy to Ella train
Yes, it is touristy.
Yes, you should still do it.
The train from Kandy to Ella winds through Sri Lanka's hill country, passing mountains, villages and huge stretches of tea plantations.
It takes several hours, so this is not the quickest way to get between the two towns. That is kind of the point.

Ella
Ella is easily one of our favourite stops in Sri Lanka.
It is a small mountain town surrounded by tea plantations, hills and jungle, with plenty of cafés, restaurants and bars once you are done exploring.
The two big hitters are Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge, and you can easily combine them into the same day. (Indy Escapes)
Sri Lanka safari
You do not need to fly to Africa to add a safari to your trip.
Udawalawe National Park is particularly well known for its elephants, and safari drives also give you the chance to spot crocodiles, jackals and plenty of other wildlife. (Indy Escapes)
We stop here between Ella and the south coast, which breaks the journey up nicely.
Mirissa and the south coast
Once you reach southern Sri Lanka, the pace changes completely.
Mirissa and Weligama are all about beaches, surf, cafés, sunsets and taking things a bit slower.
Weligama is one of the popular places to learn to surf, while Mirissa has spots including Coconut Tree Hill and nearby beaches to explore. Indy Escapes currently includes time around both areas on our Sri Lanka itinerary. (Indy Escapes)
The southwest coast generally sees calmer, sunnier beach conditions from around November through March.
What to eat in Sri Lanka
Do not come to Sri Lanka and live off hotel food.
Try rice and curry, kottu roti, hoppers, fresh seafood, sambols and basically anything involving coconut.
Sri Lankan food can have a proper kick to it, so if you are not good with spice, maybe do not try proving anything on day one.
A cooking class is also one of the easiest ways to understand what actually goes into the food instead of just eating enormous amounts of it. Which you should also do.
Sri Lanka for solo travellers
Sri Lanka works really well for solo travel.
There is plenty to see, accommodation across the main tourist route and lots of travellers moving between places like Kandy, Ella, Mirissa and Weligama.
The annoying bit is organising all the transport, activities and accommodation while trying to fit everything into one trip.

Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Most visitors should check Sri Lanka's current ETA requirements before travelling.
As of August 2026, travellers from the UK and a list of other eligible countries can obtain a 30 day tourist ETA free of charge, but it still needs to be arranged before arrival. Your passport should also have at least six months validity remaining when you enter Sri Lanka.
Visa rules change, so always check the official Sri Lankan immigration website before flying.
Money in Sri Lanka
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee, LKR.
Cards are useful, but we would still carry some cash for smaller restaurants, shops and local purchases. ATMs are available in major towns and cities, although not every machine accepts international cards.
What to wear in Sri Lanka
For most of the trip, lightweight clothes are all you need.
Bring something slightly warmer for the hill country, proper shoes for hiking, swimwear for the coast and something that covers your shoulders and knees when visiting temples.
Sri Lanka takes respect around Buddhist sites seriously, particularly around statues and religious imagery, so follow the guidance at each site.
Is Sri Lanka worth visiting?
Very much so.
The thing we love about Sri Lanka is the variety. You are not flying halfway around the world just to sit on one beach for a week.
You can travel through the mountains, ride one of the world's most famous train routes, see elephants in the wild, learn to surf, eat extremely well and still finish with a few days beside the Indian Ocean.
That is a pretty solid week.
