Is Croatia Safe for Solo Female Travellers? My Experience Sailing the Adriatic with Indy Escapes

Before I booked my spot on the Croatia sailing trip with Indy Escapes, I had one question spinning in my mind: Is Croatia safe for solo female travellers?

It wasn’t that I was nervous exactly, I’d done some solo travel before, but something about hopping aboard a yacht with a bunch of strangers in a country I’d never been to felt both thrilling and mildly terrifying. Would I fit in? Would I feel out of place as a solo woman? Was Croatia the kind of place where I’d feel safe walking around or heading out at night?

Spoiler: yes, yes, and absolutely yes. If you’re on the fence about travelling to Croatia alone, let me walk you through what I learned, and why sailing with Indy Escapes was the best decision I could’ve made.

First Impressions: Clean, Friendly, and So Easy to Navigate

From the moment I landed in Split, I felt like I could breathe easy. The airport was well-organised, everyone I encountered spoke at least some English, and I didn’t once feel like I had to keep my guard up.

As a solo female traveller, there’s something deeply comforting about a country that feels intuitive to navigate, and Croatia nailed it. The streets were clean, the locals polite, and even when I wandered around solo before boarding the yacht, I felt completely safe.

Life on the Boat: Built-in Besties and Zero Stress

This wasn’t your average backpacker boat trip. The Indy Escapes Croatia sailing trip felt thoughtfully curated from start to finish. Our home for the week? A stunning motor yacht with sun lounges on deck, spacious cabins, and some of the best swim stops I’ve ever experienced.

Even better? Everyone else on board was like me, solo travellers or small groups in their mid 20s to early 40s, looking for something a little different. The vibe was relaxed, inclusive, and just the right amount of fun.

Each day we’d have a walking orientation in a new coastal town, time to explore (or nap on deck), and lunch on board before heading off for another swim or optional activity. I never once felt like the “odd one out,” which honestly, is one of the biggest fears when travelling solo.

So… Is Croatia Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Yes, Croatia is incredibly safe for solo female travellers. Crime rates are low, especially in the coastal towns and islands we visited. I walked around by myself at sunset, wandered back from beach bars after dinner, and never felt uncomfortable.

Of course, I still followed the usual solo travel common sense such as keeping an eye on my drink, not flashing valuables, and walking with purpose, but I didn’t feel watched or harassed once. No catcalling. No pressure. Just good vibes.

That said, having a group gave me an extra sense of security. We had beach clean-ups, group dinners, and plenty of downtime to chat and connect, so even when I went off on my own, I knew I had people to come back to.

Optional Activities That Feel Like a Bonus, Not a Test

I’ve been on trips before where “optional activities” meant cliques formed fast or people felt left out. Not here.

Whether you wanted to zip-line through the mountains, join a Dubrovnik walking tour, or just sip wine and people-watch, everything felt low-pressure and well-organised.

I signed up for a wine tasting one afternoon and ended up having one of my favourite conversations of the trip with two other women who had also come solo. It was the kind of connection that happens when you say yes to the right trip…and the right people.

It’s Not Just About Safety, It’s About Comfort

The question “Is Croatia safe for solo female travellers?” isn’t just about physical safety. It’s about how comfortable you feel in your skin, in your surroundings, and in your space.

And on this trip? I felt fully myself.

Between the daily swim stops, sunset sailing, shared meals, and the feeling of waking up each morning to a new port waiting to be explored, I didn’t just feel safe, I felt at ease. I wasn’t worrying about logistics or how to meet people. Everything was taken care of.

And trust me, being able to show up to a trip knowing that your accommodation, transfers, food, and itinerary are all sorted takes a huge weight off your shoulders.

What to Pack for Peace of Mind

If you’re planning to join the Croatia sailing trip (and honestly, you should), here are a few tips from one solo female traveller to another:

  • Swimwear (obviously) - you’ll live in it

  • A light jacket or scarf for breezier evenings on deck

  • A pair of comfortable sandals or water shoes for rocky beaches

  • Something a little dressy for the Captain’s Dinner

  • A good book… though you’ll probably be too busy chatting to read it

Oh, and don’t stress about towels, they’re provided on board. Same with Wi-Fi and drinking water, which makes packing light so much easier.

Final Thoughts

So, is Croatia safe for solo female travellers?

YES! Emphatically yes.

But more than that, it’s welcoming, energising, and endlessly beautiful. I came for the adventure and the crystal-clear water. I left with a camera roll full of memories, new friendships I wasn’t expecting, and a fresh sense of confidence in myself.

If you’ve been craving a getaway that’s part adventure, part wellness, and part salty, sun-kissed magic, I can’t recommend the Indy Escapes sailing trip enough.
